# Claude extension landscape

- **Edition:** CML-WB/1.0
- **Companion HTML:** CML-TK/1.0 (`claude-mod-landscape.html`)
- **Prepared for:** Karolis Valickas
- **Date:** 3 October 2026
- **Date format:** D Month YYYY, Europe/Vilnius calendar dates. A source token that is already ISO (2026-08-24) is kept beside the British form.
- **Status:** Formative survey landscape. Not a validated control catalogue. Not a complete plugin list.
- **Scope:** Official Claude extension surfaces and the community packs that install through them, as locked in the 3 October 2026 survey. No new facts were added in this pass.
- **Units:** Star counts are the unaudited integers from the survey. No fork counts. No pushed_at.

## Status banner

This edition only restates the survey. Where the survey left a gap, the row is marked unverified (`??`) or partial (`~`). Star counts were not re-audited (GitHub API 403).

## How to read badges

| Badge | Meaning in this edition |
| --- | --- |
| ✓ | Stated as a fact in the 3 October 2026 survey, and tied to a source URL the survey treats as fetched. |
| ~ | Stated, but partial: snippet, index only, changelog mention, admin or engineering page not fully fetched, or an unaudited count. |
| ?? | Survey gap. Not fetched, search-hit only, or explicitly unverified. Not a fact to build on. |

There is no `✓✓` or `✓✓✓` in this edition. This pass did not re-fetch the pages.

## What this contains

| ID | Instrument | What it is not |
| --- | --- | --- |
| L-STACK | Product and surface stack | Not a map of one person's machine |
| L-MOD | Mods, official term from v2.1.287 | Not hooks, not skills, not MCP |
| L-PLUGIN | Plugins and marketplaces | Not an enumerated plugin catalogue |
| L-SKILL | SKILL.md versus the Skills API | Not the same install path |
| L-HOOK | Settings hooks | Not a full event list |
| L-MCP | MCP, connectors, MCPB | Not a dump of the connectors directory |
| L-SDK | Claude Agent SDK | Not confirmed npm names |
| L-ROUTE | Community routers versus the Anthropic gateway | A router README is not the Claude Code protocol |
| L-HAND | Five handoff points, DEC-01 to DEC-05 | Not extra advice beyond the survey |
| L-GAP | Gaps | A gap is unverified, not a claim that the thing is false |

# Part 1 — How the layers stack

Products are the clients: claude.ai chat, Cowork, Claude Desktop (including the Code tab; Linux is beta), Claude Code in the terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, cloud, and mobile Remote Control, plus the Claude API. ✓

Official extension surfaces: CLAUDE.md and path-scoped rules, output styles, Agent Skills, settings hooks, MCP (remote connectors and local servers), Desktop .mcpb bundles, Claude Code plugins and marketplaces, the Claude Agent SDK, and the Skills API. As of Claude Code v2.1.287, plugins can also ship mods, which are in-process JavaScript or TypeScript handlers. ✓

Community packs install through those surfaces. Routers such as Claude Code Router sit under the official client and rewrite the model endpoint. They are not Anthropic products. ✓

Caption: the lower edge is optional. A router may sit under the client. It is not a required hop.

# Part 2 — Mods

ID: L-MOD. Official term from Claude Code v2.1.287 onwards. Spec: SRC-001. Changelog mentions Added Claude Mods and `$.ui.selection()` (SRC-034, ~). Ship week is not pinned (GAP-09, ??).

| Point | Badge | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| In-process JavaScript or TypeScript handlers. | ✓ | SRC-001 |
| Can watch, rewrite, or take over tool calls, prompts, and UI (panes, band above the prompt, spinner, tool rows). | ✓ | SRC-001 |
| Not sandboxed. | ✓ | SRC-001 |
| Drawing works in the terminal and in the Desktop Code tab. | ✓ | SRC-001 |
| Drawing does not work in VS Code chat, `claude -p`, or cloud. | ✓ | SRC-001 |
| `CLAUDE_CODE_ENABLE_FUNCTION_HOOKS` is ignored from v2.1.287. | ✓ | SRC-001 |
| `claude plugin validate` lists hooks and API calls. | ✓ | SRC-001 |
| Org controls named: `disableAllHooks`, `--safe-mode`, `allowManagedModsOnly`. Admin doc not fully fetched. | ~ | SRC-002 |
| Handoff DEC-04: `disableAllHooks` or `allowManagedModsOnly` can shut user mods off while skills and MCP stay loaded. The survey does not say that about `--safe-mode`. | ✓ | DEC-04 |

Sample names are from the survey. The playground repo URL was not fetched (GAP-05).

# Part 3 — Plugins and distribution

A plugin can bundle skills, agents, hooks, MCP, LSP, monitors, `bin/` on PATH, settings, and mods. Skills are namespaced `/plugin:skill`. Reserved marketplace names are enforced; the reserved names themselves were not listed. ✓

The marketplaces doc names a community catalog, anthropics/claude-plugins-community (the survey's spelling is catalog). The GitHub page was not fetched. No URL is given here. ?? GAP-03.

`bin/` on PATH arrived in v2.1.91, week of 30 March–3 April 2026. Plugin eval is week 37. The survey does not say what that eval measured. ~

### Repos with a survey star count

Badge on every star count: ~ (GAP-12). Integers are exactly the survey figures.

| Repo | Stars | Note | Source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| anthropics/claude-plugins-official | 37348 | Official marketplace. Auto-added. Manifest schema v0.4 appears in this repo. | SRC-003 |
| anthropics/claude-code | 149161 | Official repo, not a community fork. Demo marketplace lives inside it. Star count is the repo, not a plugin census. | SRC-005 |
| obra/superpowers | 294849 | Author repo named in the survey. | SRC-006 |
| affaan-m/everything-claude-code | 272104 | Author repo named in the survey. | SRC-007 |

| thedotmack/claude-mem | 95479 | Persistent cross-session memory plugin. | SRC-033 |

### Named, not fetched as a GitHub page

| Name | Badge | Note |
| --- | --- | --- |
| anthropics/claude-plugins-community | ?? | Named in SRC-004. Page not fetched. No URL here. |
| anthropics/knowledge-work-plugins | ?? | Named as a topic marketplace beside anthropics/skills. Repo not fetched. No URL here. |
| Community @claude-community | ✓ | Handoff DEC-02 wording for the community marketplace. |
| claude.ai directory | ✓ | Separate directory that syncs into Claude Code (DEC-02). Page body beyond that was not in the survey. |

# Part 4 — Skills, rules, and output styles

A skill is a `SKILL.md` folder with staged load. Spec repo: SRC-009. anthropics/skills marketplace id: `anthropic-agent-skills` (SRC-010). ✓

Skills API (SRC-011): `POST /v1/skills`, up to 20 per request, needs `code_execution_20250825`, workspace-scoped. Examples mention `claude-opus-5-5`. That mention is not a model review. ✓

CLAUDE.md, rules, and memory: SRC-012, and memory.md indexed (SRC-013, no URL invented). Output styles: SRC-014. Concise was called out in week 34 (17–21 August 2026). Engineering post 18 December 2025: SRC-016. CLAUDE.md is advisory; a hook or a mod enforces. ✓

skills.sh (SRC-015): leaderboard not counted. ??

# Part 5 — Hooks

SRC-017. Kinds: shell, HTTP, prompt, agent, MCP-tool. Events named in the survey: PreToolUse, PostToolUse, Stop, PermissionDenied, InstructionsLoaded. Full list not copied (GAP-13). ~ for completeness, ✓ for the names that were written down.

2026 week 14 (v2.1.86–v2.1.91, 30 March–3 April 2026; SRC-035 listed): PermissionDenied hook, defer on `permissionDecision`, per-tool MCP result cap via `_meta.anthropic/maxResultSizeChars`, ceiling `500000`. ~

Changelog also mentions `asyncRewake`, InstructionsLoaded, and monitors (SRC-034). ~

Agent teams, dynamic workflows, and channels are indexed at SRC-018. Channels page: SRC-019, indexed, not summarised. ~

| Cowork custom connectors must be publicly reachable. Help-centre snippet. No URL recorded. | ~ | GAP-17 |
| Computer use in the CLI is a research preview on macOS Pro/Max, week 14. | ~ | SRC-035 |

# Part 7 — Agent SDK

Overview SRC-026. Custom tools SRC-027. Plugins SRC-028. The old name Claude Code SDK migrated to Claude Agent SDK. The TypeScript SDK V2 session API is marked removed. ✓ for those statements.

npm package names: not confirmed (GAP-11, ??). `computer_toolset_20260801`: unverified (GAP-10, ??). Tool-use and computer-use pages: search hits, not fully fetched, no URLs (GAP-14, ??).

# Part 8 — Routers

Official gateway: SRC-029 and SRC-030. ✓

musistudio/claude-code-router: SRC-031, release SRC-036. Stars 37524 (~). Release v3.0.22 published 2026-08-24 (24 August 2026). npm `@musistudio/claude-code-router`. Gateway `127.0.0.1:3456`. Described as now a multi-agent control plane. ✓ for those identifiers.

LiteLLM tutorial: SRC-032. A tutorial link, not an Anthropic product and not a star count. ✓ that the URL was in the survey.

thedotmack/claude-mem: SRC-033, 95479 stars (~), persistent cross-session memory plugin.

Proxy repos: GAP-06 only. Do not treat them as verified projects.

These two pictures are alternative paths, not one client calling both on every turn.

# Part 9 — Five handoff points

Wording is the survey's. DEC-05 is quoted, then qualified by GAP-18. It is not silently upgraded into a fork ranking.

| ID | Title | Statement |
| --- | --- | --- |
| DEC-01 | Mod is a layer, not the whole plugin | Mod is official Claude Code term v2.1.287+: in-process JS/TS, can redraw UI and rewrite tool calls, unsandboxed. Settings hooks, skills, and MCP are different layers. A plugin can contain all of them. |
| DEC-02 | Distribution is marketplaces | Distribution is marketplaces. Official claude-plugins-official auto-added. Community @claude-community. Author repos unreviewed. claude.ai has a separate directory that syncs into Claude Code. |
| DEC-03 | Skills file is not the Skills API | Skills are the portable instruction pack. API version needs code execution, is workspace-scoped, different install path from a Claude Code skill file. |
| DEC-04 | CLAUDE.md does not enforce | CLAUDE.md does not enforce. Hooks and mods do. Orgs can shut user mods off with disableAllHooks or allowManagedModsOnly while leaving skills and MCP loaded. |
| DEC-05 | A router README is not the protocol | Model routing is the largest community fork and breaks when Claude Code request shape changes. Anthropic gateway is the supported version. Do not treat a router README as the Claude Code protocol. |

### Roles the pictures use

These are documented roles, not a studied cohort. No personal stack was in the survey, so the baseline is the official client, not a named live system.

| Step | Role | What the survey supports |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Author | Ships a mod inside a plugin (v2.1.287+). |
| 2 | User | Installs from a marketplace: official auto-added, community @claude-community, or an unreviewed author repo. |
| 3 | Org admin | Can set disableAllHooks or allowManagedModsOnly and still leave skills and MCP loaded. |

```mermaid
flowchart LR
  author["Author"]
  admin["Org admin"]
  user["Claude Code user"]
  ship["Ship a mod in a plugin"]
  lock["Leave skills and MCP, block user mods"]
  install["Install from a marketplace"]
  surfaces["Extension surfaces"]
  author --> ship
  ship --> surfaces
  admin --> lock
  lock --> surfaces
  user --> install
```

```mermaid
  end
  subgraph ccLane["Claude Code lane"]
  end
  subgraph modelLane["Model lane"]
    gate["Anthropic gateway supported"]
    fork["Community router not Anthropic"]
  end
  choose --> bundle
  bundle --> gate
  bundle --> fork
```

Lane picture: marketplace choice, then the plugin loads its parts, then the model path is one of the two alternatives in Part 8.

### Baseline, useful, fail

| Card | Statement | Badge |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Baseline | Official clients and the extension surfaces in Part 1. A community router is under that client, not part of it. Hooks, skills, and MCP are different layers from mods. | ✓ |
| Useful | On the terminal and the Desktop Code tab, a mod can redraw UI and rewrite tool calls. Elsewhere in the product list, do not assume drawing works. | ✓ |
| Fail | No drawing in VS Code chat, claude -p, or cloud. Mods are not sandboxed. From v2.1.287 the function-hooks env var is ignored. A community router breaks when the Claude Code request shape changes. | ✓ |

# Part 10 — Gaps

| ID | Badge | Gap |
| --- | --- | --- |
| GAP-01 | ?? | No pushed_at and no fork counts. GitHub API returned 403. |
| GAP-02 | ?? | Official marketplace plugin list was not enumerated. This page is not a plugin catalogue. |
| GAP-03 | ?? | anthropics/claude-plugins-community is named in the marketplaces doc. Its GitHub page was not fetched. No URL is given here. |
| GAP-04 | ?? | anthropics/knowledge-work-plugins is named as a topic marketplace. The repo was not fetched. No URL is given here. |
| GAP-05 | ?? | claude-code-playground is where samples token-weather, blast-radius, and replay-theater are named. The repo URL was not fetched. |
| GAP-06 | ?? | 1rgs/claude-code-proxy and fuergaosi233/claude-code-proxy were search hits only. Stars were not fetched. Not verified projects beyond that. |
| GAP-07 | ?? | skills.sh leaderboard counts were not taken. |
| GAP-08 | ?? | claude.ai Projects, custom instructions, and Cowork plugin pages were seen only via snippets. |
| GAP-09 | ?? | Mods ship week is not pinned. The What's New index stops at week 37 (7–11 September 2026) without a mods entry. No week-37 URL was in the survey. |
| GAP-10 | ?? | computer_toolset_20260801 was search synthesis and was not re-fetched. Unverified. Not treated as a real tool id. |
| GAP-11 | ?? | Agent SDK npm package names were not confirmed. None are listed. |
| GAP-12 | ~ | Star counts below are the survey figures and are unaudited. |
| GAP-13 | ~ | The full hook event list was not copied from the hooks page body. |
| GAP-14 | ?? | Agent SDK tool-use and computer-use pages were search hits and were not fully fetched. No URLs were recorded for them. |
| GAP-15 | ~ | The mods admin doc was linked and not fully fetched. |
| GAP-16 | ~ | The desktop-extensions page was not fully fetched. It is the source for the .dxt to .mcpb rename. |
| GAP-17 | ~ | Cowork custom connectors must be publicly reachable. That is a help-centre snippet, not a fully fetched page, and no URL was recorded. |
| GAP-18 | ~ | Handoff 5 says model routing is the largest community fork. Fork counts were not available (GAP-01). Other named repos have higher unaudited star counts. Stars are not forks. The handoff line is not a measured ranking. |

# Provenance

## Method

The fact graph was locked from the survey supplied with this task, dated 3 October 2026. This pass did not browse, did not call the GitHub API, and did not add star counts, dates, or URLs. Diagrams were render-checked with `@mermaid-js/mermaid-cli@11.4.2` (the CLI resolved mermaid 11.17.2). The same `.mmd` sources are embedded in the HTML twin.

## Decisions

DEC-01 to DEC-05 are the five handoff points in Part 9. No further decisions were added.

## Bibliography

Tier tags describe the kind of source in the survey, not a second audit. T1 official doc or engineering page. T2 official GitHub. T3 community GitHub or other community page.

## Limitations

- Formative. Not a security sign-off and not a plugin catalogue.
- Star counts are unaudited survey integers.
- Several pages were snippets, indexes, or not fetched. Those rows stay `~` or `??`.
- Handoff 5's "largest community fork" is not backed by a fork count here (GAP-18).
- No personal or company stack was in the survey, so nothing here is "your current system".
- Diagrams omit items that would not fit the node cap; the tables are the complete inventory.
- The HTML tab click-path was not exercised in a browser in this pass.
